About Islas del Ibicuy Protected Wetlands

Located in the province of Entre Ríos, Argentina, the Islas del Ibicuy Protected Wetlands form one of the largest and most ecologically significant wetland complexes in the Paraná Delta region. This area consists of a labyrinth of islands, swamps, and river channels shaped by the Paraná and Uruguay Rivers. The terrain is predominantly floodplain, characterized by permanent and temporary wetlands, marshes, and riparian forests. This complex ecosystem supports a high diversity of flora and fauna, including dozens of bird species such as herons, ibises, and the endangered red-and-green macaw, as well as mammals like capybaras and marsh deer. The wetlands provide crucial habitat for fish and amphibians, playing an important role in regional fisheries and biodiversity maintenance. Historically, the islands have supported traditional livelihoods including fishing, small-scale agriculture, and sustainable forestry by local communities known as isleños. Today, these wetlands are increasingly recognized for their ecological value and potential for nature-based tourism. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the area primarily via boat tours and kayaking excursions through tranquil waterways, providing opportunities for birdwatching, photography, and engaging with a pristine natural environment. The Islas del Ibicuy Protected Wetlands represent an important conservation area for preserving the Paraná Delta’s unique hydrological and ecological dynamics while offering visitors a rare glimpse into Argentina’s expansive freshwater wetland wilderness.
